Russia is not ready for the PD-35 engine: but repairing Boeing and Airbus leads to a dead end

Aviation expert Andrey Patrakov called for focusing efforts on creating new equipment

Russia has encountered problems with repairing Rolls-Royce Trent engines for Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A330, Boeing 777, as well as PW4000 for Airbus A330 and GE90 for Boeing 777. However, aviation expert and head of the flight safety service RunAvia, Andrey Patrakov, believes that it is not necessary to put all efforts into mastering it.

According to him, it is easier to develop new equipment that will eventually replace foreign aircraft.

Russia does not produce turbofan engines of this size. The domestic analogue, PD-35, is only being developed. The accumulated competencies and equipment on the territory of the Russian Federation are still insufficient.

Earlier it became known that a new test bench for testing experimental PD-35 engines has already begun to be built in the Perm region. The amount of investment has increased to 3.7 billion rubles.

As a reminder, there is currently no specific aircraft for the PD-35 in Russia. There were thoughts of "re-shoeing" the wide-body Il-96 for it, but the re-motorization would require a complete redesign of the aircraft structure, aviation expert Roman Gusarov warned.
