On February 10, 2026, an An-24 turboprop aircraft operating a medical flight on the Irkutsk — Bodaybo route experienced the failure of one of its engines in flight. The crew promptly decided to divert to an alternate airfield — the landing was completed without incident or injuries.
According to the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor's Office, during the flight the pilots informed air traffic controllers that one engine had shut down. Due to difficult weather conditions at Bodaybo Airport (snowfall, overcast skies, air temperature around –11 °C), the crew decided to land at the alternate airfield of Nizhneangarsk (Republic of Buryatia). The aircraft landed normally at 13:45 local time (08:45 Moscow time), without damage and without any threat to the people on board.
The Baikal-Angara and Baikal Transport Prosecutor's Offices immediately organized an inspection into the aviation incident. Specialists are establishing the exact cause of the engine failure and assessing the crew's actions and the technical condition of the aircraft.
The An-24 has traditionally been considered one of the most reliable aircraft for regional and medical transport operations in the conditions of Siberia and the Far East. The aircraft's design allows it to confidently continue flight and perform a safe landing even with only one AI-24 engine operating (rated at 2,550 hp each), which is exactly what was demonstrated in this situation.
