The Central Design Bureau (TsKB) Rubin may restore the Soviet deep-sea submersibles Mir-1 and Mir-2. This was reported by Andrei Gebruk, Deputy Director for Research at the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAN).
According to him, technical solutions are currently being coordinated. Partners have emerged who are ready to help with the restoration of the equipment.
At the moment, the issue is that diagnostics need to be carried out to determine the condition of the submersibles, what requires attention, replacement, reworking, and repair. Certainly, a great deal requires such attention, but this must be done with very sound technical judgment. Rubin is ready to carry out such a task, and we are now at the stage of agreeing on contractual terms and technical solutions.
Gebruk added that to begin the work, one of the submersibles must be delivered to the Marine Robotics Center in Kronstadt.
Earlier, it became known that the cost of restoring the Mir deep-sea submersibles is approximately 20 billion rubles. This is cheaper and many times faster than creating new vessels of a similar class, the Institute of Oceanology noted.
