Specialists from Sechenov University have presented the latest laboratory model of the so-called "liver-on-a-chip." Thanks to the development, scientists can assess the effectiveness and safety of drugs before the start of clinical trials.
The researchers aimed to create a laboratory model that would be both scalable and standardized, while maintaining high physiological relevance. This was stated by Associate Professor of the Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Anastasia Shpichka.
One of the key advantages of the design is its sensitivity to drug compounds. We see that this system is able to more accurately reflect the reactions of the human liver, which is especially important in the preclinical development stages.
Tests have shown that the new model demonstrates a more physiological response to common hepatotoxic and anticancer drugs, such as acetaminophen, diclofenac, doxorubicin, and cisplatin, compared to traditional spheroids used in scientific research.
