The "Kosmos" airline of the Ministry of Defense Special Flight Detachment has renewed its operator certificate. In 2025, the carrier barely avoided bankruptcy, but now it hopes to earn money on VIP transportation.
Prior to this, the carrier's certificate was suspended in February of this year at the request of "Kosmos" itself.
By that time, the company, 75% of whose shares belong to the Special Flight Detachment (SLO) of the Ministry of Defense, had debts of 900 million rubles, including 20 million rubles in salaries, and its net loss since 2019 reached 700 million rubles.
Of the two Yak-42s remaining in the fleet, only one retained its airworthiness certificate. And the number of personnel decreased from 200 to 40 people. According to Kommersant, "Kosmos" plans to gradually improve its financial condition after the resumption of flights by increasing the number of commercial VIP flights.
Fedor Borisov, chief expert of the Institute of Transport Economics at the Higher School of Economics, called this idea difficult, given that the business transportation market is quite balanced in terms of supply and demand.
