A Record Eight Nuclear Icebreakers to Serve the Northern Sea Route for the First Time

The universal nuclear icebreaker "Chukotka" of Project 22220 is scheduled to be delivered to the customer in December 2026, according to Andrey Puchkov, General Director of JSC "United Shipbuilding Corporation."

The readiness of the "Chukotka" nuclear icebreaker is approximately 70%. The icebreakers of Project 22220 have a power of 60 MW, making them the largest and most powerful in the world. The tasks of the nuclear vessels include ensuring year-round navigation in the western Arctic region.

Alexey Likhachev, General Director of Rosatom, also announced that a record eight nuclear icebreakers will serve the Northern Sea Route starting in early December 2026 for the first time in Russian history.

Currently, five icebreakers are already in the water area, and the nuclear icebreaker "Stalingrad" of Project 22220 was laid down at the Baltic Shipyard on November 18.

The icebreakers of Project 22220 are 173.3 m long, 34 m wide, have an icebreaking capability of up to 3 m, and a displacement of 33,540 tons. The service life of the nuclear vessels is 40 years.
