The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia stated that it does not support initiatives to introduce restrictions on the operation of cars with right-hand drive. This was announced by the official representative of the agency, Irina Volk.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs is not developing and does not plan to develop regulatory acts concerning the prohibition or additional burdens for owners of such transport. Volk emphasized that in 2024, accidents involving right-hand drive cars accounted for about 12% of all accidents with fatalities.
The draft of the new Road Safety Strategy provides for the study of the operational features of such cars. It is planned to develop measures to reduce the risks associated with the design features of right-hand drive transport, including the adjustment of lighting devices.
The agency also intends to pay attention to improving the quality of driver training and conducting educational work. At the same time, Volk stressed that there is no talk of bans.
The topic of restrictions for right-hand drive cars is discussed in Russia regularly. In September, Senator Andrei Kutepov sent a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov with a proposal to stimulate the replacement of such cars with safer ones. However, experts believe that a mass abandonment of right-hand drive transport is impossible in the coming years due to its economic accessibility and popularity in the Far East and Siberia.
According to "Autostat", there are almost 3.9 million cars with right-hand drive in the country, more than half of which are registered in the regions of the eastern part of Russia. For many residents, these cars remain the only affordable alternative to new cars of domestic and foreign production.
