Rosatom to Prevent Baikal Pollution: Eliminating Phenol Storage Facility in Ulan-Ude

Attempts to eliminate the pollution site have been unsuccessfully undertaken since 2005

Rosatom is eliminating the phenol storage facility in Ulan-Ude. This was reported by the state corporation's press service.

Attempts to eliminate the facility have been made since 2005, but the specifics of the storage facility and the nature of the accumulated pollution require a comprehensive engineering and environmental approach. At the end of 2023, a structure with the necessary authority and experience – the Federal Environmental Operator Rosatom – took over the project.

Specialists from the Federal Environmental Agency (FEO) have developed several options for eliminating the phenol storage facility, located 80 km from Lake Baikal. The recommended approach includes installing a protective curtain around the perimeter of the storage facility, extracting and removing the main source of pollution – coal tar, and covering the site with a special waterproofing coating.

The phenol storage facility was formed in the 1980s. Due to the lack of insulation and engineering protection, there is a risk of migration of pollutants into the soil and groundwater within the buffer zone of the Baikal natural territory. The implementation of the proposed plan will minimize environmental risks and protect the unique ecosystem of Lake Baikal.
