The Institute of Thermophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is jointly modernizing the combustion chambers of the PD-14 engine (used on the Russian MC-21 airliner), according to the institute's director, Dmitry Markovich.
In the combustion chamber of the PD-14 engine, so-called rich combustion occurs first, and then additional oxidizer is blown in. Thus, the modes change inside it.
This technology has been used for quite some time in the world, it is reliable, but it does not provide high environmental performance. The global trend is now based on lean combustion with an excess of oxidizer, but this combustion chamber needs to be optimized, because if you simply implement such a mode, it will be unstable.
Scientists plan to create conditions for stable and efficient operation of this combustion chamber. This will make the engine more environmentally friendly.
The MC-21 aircraft with Russian PD-14 engines received approval documents from Rosaviatsiya in 2022.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Russian PD-14 aircraft engines will be mass-produced in 2024.
