The tanker is designed for oil transportation and is capable of navigating independently in the waters of the northern seas without icebreaker support. The vessel can operate in conditions of rarefied annual ice with a thickness of up to 1.1 meters in the winter-spring period and up to 1.7 meters in the summer-autumn period.

The tanker's length is 257 meters (7 meters longer than Aframax tankers). The vessel's width is 34 meters, draft is 14 meters, board height is 21 meters, and speed is 15.5 knots.

The propulsion system includes steerable full-circle rudder propellers. The tanker will be equipped with a bow loading device for receiving oil from a stationary offshore ice-resistant berth.

The solemn keel-laying ceremony of the tanker took place in December 2020. At the end of July 2023, "Valentin Pikul" was launched.
