New car models are planned to be launched at the former General Motors plant in St. Petersburg. This was announced by the Chairman of the Committee for Industrial Policy, Innovation and Trade of St. Petersburg, Kirill Soloveichik, during the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. Previously, the GM plant in Shushary assembled Chevrolet and Opel cars.
Negotiations are underway with Art-Finance, which bought Hyundai's assets. These assets also included the General Motors site.
According to him, it is about restoring production. What kind of cars they want to assemble is unknown, but judging by the latest trends, foreign car partners are most likely to be from China.
It is worth recalling that the assembly of cars in Shushary began in 2008. General Motors left Russia in 2015, after which production was stopped. In 2020, the plant was bought by Hyundai, and after this auto giant left Russia, the industrial site went to Art-Finance, which produces cars under the Solaris brand.
