Russia is increasing its arsenal of Kh-101 cruise missiles for delivering high-precision, long-range strikes amid a limited defense budget and an aging bomber fleet. This is according to military expert Brandon J. Weichert in an article for The National Interest.
The Russian defense industry is extremely efficient. Russia surpasses its NATO rivals not only in mass production but also in the complexity of the weapons it creates. The Kh-101 is the missile the Russians rely on.
The Kh-101 combines stealth, precision, and long range. The missile meets the Russian Aerospace Forces' need to strike protected targets.
The development of the Kh-101 is due to the reduction in the number of Russian bombers. And Russia has created that very "force multiplier" capable of hitting targets from a long distance without endangering pilots.
Its carriers are the Tu-95, Tu-22, Tu-160, and Su-34. Previously, the missile contained a large number of Western components, which have become difficult to purchase due to sanctions. But Russia has found workarounds.
The Kh-101 is the pinnacle of Russian missile engineering. It will create constant problems for NATO.
