The transition from fighter jets to the passenger MC-21 became a new experience for Irkutsk Aviation Plant test pilot Damir Shaykhutdinov. After retraining, he is preparing to participate in acceptance tests of production airliners and has already evaluated the aircraft's features, including control and cockpit ergonomics.
According to Shaykhutdinov, mastering this new class of aircraft for him went without serious difficulties. He particularly noted the MC-21's control system, which he called “very obedient”. In his assessment, the cockpit has enough space, and modern displays and onboard systems make the workplace comfortable.
The sensations from working are excellent. First, it is very beautiful. Second, everything is modern – both the monitors and the internal systems. Third, if you noticed, its cabin is very wide, the cockpit is quite spacious, it's easy to breathe. The ergonomics are at a very good level. I believe that for both pilots and passengers, this will be a very high-quality and comfortable aircraft
Shaykhutdinov also spoke about the ground tests of the MC-21 with PD-14 engines, which took place on September 24. During the work, the start-up of the power plants and their operation at maximum modes were checked, as well as the functioning of onboard systems and controls.
Separately, the pilot noted the performance of the PD-14 and the absence of comments based on the results of the ground check. However, his words about the engine's great future and the possible expansion of the PD family are a specialist's assessment, not a confirmed manufacturer's plan.
