Russian marketplaces and logistics operators lack their own medium-sized cargo aircraft fleet, which often leaves even long-distance transportation between major centers of the country dependent on passenger flights or road logistics. Aviation blogger SkyExpert drew attention to the problem, suggesting considering the creation of a cargo version of the Tu-214 with a commercial payload of 20–30 tons.
The Tu-214 already has a maximum commercial payload of 25.2 tons, but this is a passenger aircraft indicator and does not mean the ability to carry 25.2 tons of net cargo. Rostec indicates a maximum commercial payload of 25.2 tons for the Tu-214.
At the same time, the Tu-204 family already had full-fledged cargo versions. For example, the Tu-204S was created as a cargo aircraft with a commercial payload of about 25 tons, and the Tu-204-120S — up to 30 tons.
Therefore, the proposal to use the Tu-214 as the basis for a cargo aircraft does not imply the creation of a completely new platform. However, transforming a passenger liner into a modern freighter will require separate design development, testing, and certification.
The idea of a cargo modification of the Tu-214 is not new: back in 2023, Tupolev Managing Director Vadim Korolev announced plans for the proactive development of a cargo version of the aircraft.
