Rosatom is simultaneously developing about ten projects for small nuclear power plants of various capacities. The main focus is on the RITM reactor family, which is already used on icebreakers and is planned for use in floating and land-based NPPs.
13 RITM reactors have been manufactured for the nuclear icebreaker fleet. Another one is intended for the first floating power unit of the Baimskoye deposit, and the second is nearing completion. In total, Russian enterprises are currently producing 11 reactor units for small power plants.
In June, Rosatom began construction of a small NPP in Uzbekistan. Two RITM reactors are already being made for it. Such projects are needed where building a large power plant is too long, expensive, or simply unprofitable.
Separately, the state corporation is developing ultra-small reactors. One of them is the "Shelf-M" for the Elkon Mining and Metallurgical Combine as part of the Chukotka ASMM. The unit will be able to operate for up to 60 years, providing up to 10 MW of electrical and 35 MW of thermal power.
A construction schedule has already been prepared for the "Shelf-M", engineering surveys of the site have begun, and fuel resource tests have been completed. The project is now approaching the investment justification stage.
