Russia is building a plant that will give nuclear fuel a second life

The timeline for the plant's appearance is not even approximately defined

Rosatom will build Russia's largest spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. For now, the future enterprise is at the investment justification stage, and the construction timeline is unknown.

By the end of 2026, specialists will determine the construction site, taking into account logistics and environmental requirements.

The new radiochemical plant will become a key element of the closed nuclear fuel cycle. Its task is to extract valuable materials from spent fuel and return them to production for subsequent use at nuclear power plants.

The first module of the plant will be able to process up to 400 tons of fuel per year. In the future, capacity is planned to be increased due to the modular design of the complex. The plant will work with both traditional thermal reactor fuel and fast neutron reactor fuel.

Rosatom representative Dmitry Konstantinov explained that the development of closed-cycle technologies allows up to 90% of spent nuclear fuel to be reprocessed.
