Mongolia has begun discussing a basic study for the construction of a small modular nuclear power plant in the New Kharkhorin area and simultaneously intends to accelerate the implementation of joint energy projects with Russia. The plans were announced by Mongolian Minister of Energy Badrkhyn Naidalaa during a meeting with Russian Ambassador Alexey Evsikov.
The Mongolian government considers cooperation with Russia as one of the key areas for modernizing its energy sector. According to the head of the Ministry of Energy, the country needs new generating capacities and investments that will increase the reliability of the energy system and ensure stable passage through the upcoming heating seasons. In this regard, Ulaanbaatar expects to intensify joint projects with Russian companies.
Earlier, Sergey Demin, head of Rosatom's representative office in Mongolia, noted that the small NPP project could become the main direction of Russian-Mongolian cooperation for many decades. RITM-200 reactors are proposed for the plant – a technology that has already been in operation for many years on Russian nuclear icebreakers and has proven its reliability in Arctic conditions.
In parallel, Mongolia continues to discuss with the Russian side the possibility of constructing a nuclear power plant in the area of the Mardai uranium deposit. This site is part of the Dornod uranium cluster in the east of the country and was explored and prepared by Soviet specialists back in the 1980s.
