A pilot project for collecting batteries at Wildberries marketplace pick-up points (PUPs) will be launched in Yaroslavl Oblast. The corresponding agreement was signed by representatives of the Federal Environmental Operator (FSUE "FEO", part of Rosatom), the regional government, and RWB on the sidelines of the SPIEF, the state corporation's press service reported.
The project involves using PUPs as centralized collection points for spent chemical power sources.
Specialized containers will be installed at the pick-up points. The parties to the agreement expect to organize a comprehensive system for collecting Class I and II hazardous waste. Following the pilot project, it may be scaled to other regions.
In Russia, it is forbidden to dispose of used batteries in garbage containers. Management companies and HOAs are responsible for this. Collection, storage, and disposal are regulated by Federal Law No. 89-FZ "On Production and Consumption Waste".
A list of active battery collection points can be found on the FSUE "FEO" website. Rosatom is responsible for creating this infrastructure. The state corporation also develops technologies for extracting metals from spent power sources.
In particular, employees of the State Research and Design Institute of Rare Metals Industry (JSC "Giredmet", part of Rosatom) have developed a technology for extracting valuable components from spent batteries — zinc, manganese, iron, nickel, cadmium, and graphite. These are sent for secondary processing, including for the production of paints and varnishes, accumulators, and power cells.
