A full-fledged industry of unmanned systems has formed in St. Petersburg — from development to application. As Governor Alexander Beglov told TASS, today more than 70 companies operate in the city, producing a third of all Russian drones. Technical universities provide the industry with personnel in the fields of aeronautics, photonics, and electronic equipment design.
The authorities are preparing infrastructure for the legal use of drones. Plans have been developed to open airspace for civilian unmanned aerial vehicles, two landing sites, a test range, and a regional UAS operator are being created.
Based on "Technopark St. Petersburg", which received the status of a Scientific and Production Center for Testing and Competencies, it is planned to create a multi-environment center for unmanned and robotic systems — for air, water, and land. The center already unites more than 60 residents and has attracted funding for 28 projects over two years.
The effectiveness of drones has been proven in practice. When monitoring the waters of Lake Ladoga in the interests of Rosrybolovstvo, the area is checked three times faster compared to traditional methods, with high detail and fixation of evidence. Costs for control and supervisory measures are reduced by 45%.
Thus, St. Petersburg is forming technological and management solutions that are planned to be scaled throughout Russia in the future.
