Kazakhstan rejected Russian turbines but came for help with NPP

The Russian Federation will finance the construction of a nuclear power plant in the republic

The cost of creating the first Balkhash nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan will amount to $16.4 billion. This was announced by the head of the atomic energy agency, Almasadam Satkaliyev.

Of this amount, $14.4 billion will go to the construction of two power units, and about $2 billion will be allocated to social infrastructure and a physical security system. The main funds will be provided through an export credit from Russia.

Earlier, Kazakhstan refused Russian turbines, choosing alternative suppliers, including Chinese ones. At that time, local authorities explained the choice by economic efficiency and equipment cost.

The republic also wants to refuse electricity supplies from Russia starting in 2027 due to the development of national energy capacities.
