The ISS crew has begun final preparations for a spacewalk scheduled for May 27. Station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov reported that the cosmonauts have already unpacked and prepared the equipment for the "Solntse-Teragerts" scientific experiment. All technological fasteners have been removed from the equipment; now it only remains to be taken overboard and installed.
The experiment, conducted by specialists from the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FIAN), aims to study solar radiation in the poorly understood terahertz range. According to Kud-Sverchkov, the unique equipment will operate simultaneously at eight frequencies. It will be placed on the external surface of the station on a special rotating platform. This will ensure continuous aiming at the Sun throughout the observation period.
The data obtained will help scientists understand the mechanisms of solar flares, improve the accuracy of their prediction, and develop measures to protect against radiation exposure. In addition, the equipment will allow testing the possibility of early detection of dangerous space objects.
The spacewalk will be performed by cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergey Mikaev. They will work in Orlan-MKS spacesuits No. 7 and No. 6. They will have to install the equipment and retrieve the results of previous experiments. Flight engineer Andrey Fedyayev will be on duty from the station's board at the ERA robotic arm control panel, providing support to colleagues working outside.
