Application for dietary correction in kidney disease patients developed at Sechenov University

Digital "plate" automatically determines CKD stage

The first application in Russia for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) will allow delaying renal replacement therapy through a personalized diet. The development was presented by specialists from Sechenov University, TASS was informed by the university's press service.

The tool calculates target values for proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and total caloric intake, based on laboratory data — creatinine and urea concentrations. After entering the analyses, the program automatically determines the CKD stage, and then allows visually "assembling" a plate: the user selects products and their quantity, and the system displays all characteristics of the dish along with the minimum daily energy requirement. Previously, patients received only paper tables from doctors or used unadapted online calculators that did not take into account nephrological specifics.

Many years of clinical experience show that a strict diet provides nephro- and cardioprotective effects, but non-compliance due to the lack of a convenient tool more quickly depletes residual kidney function. The digital service for the first time bridges the gap between general recommendations and daily food choices: personalized settings improve laboratory parameters, increase the effectiveness of drug therapy, and directly shift the start date of dialysis.
