Il-96 crossed out: Russia is building its own "Boeing 787"

The development of the airliner was confirmed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade

Russia has not stopped the development of a wide-body aircraft. Currently, scientific and technical groundwork is being prepared for the airliner. This was stated by the head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov.

He reminded that the class of wide-body aircraft is quite broad. These can be machines with a capacity of 250 to 500 seats. Such airliners can be single-deck or double-deck, with different fuselage widths and layouts.

All that unites them are two aisles between the seats in the passenger cabin. Therefore, in order not to miscalculate and to provide airlines with the aircraft they need, we are currently discussing the requirements for this machine.

Russia already has a wide-body airliner – the Il-96-400M. But it did not go into mass production, as airlines refused to buy it due to its four engines.

In August 2025, the United Aircraft Corporation patented a new long-haul aircraft. By the totality of its characteristics, it resembles the American Boeing 787 with a capacity of 236 to 320 seats. The range of the airliner is up to 13.6 thousand km in the basic version.
