Russian Navy marine special forces fighters face a wide range of threats amid the active development of surface and underwater drones. This was stated by the commander of the marine special forces unit with the call sign Anvar.

The threats have significantly increased. This includes the use of various types of drones – surface, aerial, and underwater – as well as new detection and control systems.

According to the unit commander, the fighters rarely use communication devices, as information can be intercepted. In addition, potential adversaries have developed many systems that can detect a person in the water.

The marine special forces have more tasks, he added. Servicemen participate in the development and testing of new equipment and weapons. They also work on technical documentation that has not been updated since Soviet times, Anvar concluded.

What weapons do Russian Navy marine special forces use?

The marine special forces are armed with the Soviet underwater assault rifle APS (developed in the 1970s). In water, it shoots up to 30 m, on land — up to 100 m. The cartridge length for APS is 15 cm.

The fighters also use the amphibious assault rifle ADS (serial production began in 2021). Special cartridges PSP and PSP-UD of 5.45 mm caliber have been developed for it. This is the world's first weapon that is equally effective underwater and on land.

The marine special forces are armed with the Soviet special underwater pistol — SPP-1 (produced since 1971). The pistol fires single shots. The weapon is manually loaded with 4 cartridges.
