Electric buses for 50 million rubles could not withstand winter in Siberia: Omsk returned "Sirius" and "General" to the factory

High cost and operational difficulties outweighed the advantages of new transport

Omsk has completed testing of electric buses, following which the city decided to abandon their purchase, the "Avtovoz" Telegram channel reported. Testing took place from December 19 to January 25. Two models were tested on the routes – "Sirius" and "General", which manufacturers provided free of charge for pilot operation. After the tests were completed, the vehicles were returned to the factories.

The main reason for the refusal was the economic inexpediency of using electric buses in Siberian conditions. According to estimates, the cost of one vehicle reaches about 53 million rubles, while a conventional bus costs approximately 16 million rubles. In addition to purchasing the electric buses themselves, significant investments are required in charging infrastructure, maintenance, and ensuring stable operation in low-temperature conditions. The risks of equipment downtime were also taken into account.

At the same time, the city does not plan to completely abandon electric transport. Omsk already has a network of trolleybuses and trams, which remain the basis of the system. For the region, this is a more predictable model with ready infrastructure and established operation.

The "Sirius" and "General" electric buses are modern low-floor models of urban transport with electric traction. They are equipped with traction batteries providing a range of 150 to 250 km on average, depending on operating conditions, an energy recuperation system, and climate control equipment for operation in cold climates.
