Russia Plans to Explore the Moon Until 2060: Long-Term Strategy Being Prepared

Russia wants to build a plan for working on the Moon for decades to come—up to 2060. This is a systemic program that will combine manned flights, robots, new technologies, and cooperation with business. Details were revealed by Anatoly Petrukovich, Director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Russian Academy of Sciences is already working on a document that will define the development strategy of our country's lunar program. This strategy will form the basis for planning all activities aimed at exploring and developing the Moon, and will help make the process more consistent and effective.

According to the materials for the report, work on the document began back in 2025. It is planned to form a broader long-term model of Russia's presence in lunar orbit and on the surface of the Moon.

The future strategy outlines the main directions:

  • integration with the prospective Russian manned program;
  • development of robotics as a key tool;
  • coordination with the space nuclear project;
  • attracting private business;
  • expanding international cooperation.

The document is currently under development. The timing of its final approval is not specified.

It was previously reported that the launch of the Luna-28, Luna-29, and Luna-30 missions had been postponed. They are now scheduled for 2032–2036.
