New "ersatz air defense" based on "Ural" with R-77 missiles from Su-35 created in Russia

Aviation ammunition was converted for ground launch, but there are questions about targeting

An unusual anti-aircraft missile system was spotted in Orel, created on the basis of the Ural truck. R-77 air-to-air missiles adapted for ground launch are used as weapons.

Judging by the published footage, the system carries four guided medium-range air-to-air missiles, modernized specifically for ground use.

However, the effectiveness of the complex directly depends on external targeting and detection means — from mobile radars to integration with external data channels.

The concept of ground use of the R-77 was conceived back in the USSR, but it has only now been put into practice. In simplified versions, such missiles are capable of hitting targets at altitudes up to 9 km and at a range of up to 12 km.

Aviation carriers of ammunition are Su-35, MiG-35 and Su-30 fighters.

Similar solutions are already being used in other countries. For example, FrankenSAM with RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles and the Raven complex with AIM-132 ASRAAM are known. In serial systems, a similar approach already works in NASAMS and IRIS-T, which use AIM-120 and AIM-9 air-to-air missiles.
