Failure of the Russian iPhone for 10 Billion Rubles: "SMI Holding" Smartphone Project Brought Huge Losses

The company hopes for a new strategy, but the financial indicators are alarming

The company "SMI Holding" (part of the project "Sovereign Mobile Initiative"), which was supposed to launch Highscreen smartphones on the market, reported a sharp deterioration in financial performance at the end of 2025. The company's net loss increased by 3.6 times, reaching 188 million rubles, CNews reports. At the same time, revenue amounted to only 95 thousand rubles, and the cost of production was absent.

One of the reasons for this situation was the creation of a reserve for doubtful debts of 143 million rubles, which was not returned by the project partner — the company "DDD2". The creation of such a reserve, according to lawyers, is an accounting "alarm signal", since the company is practically preparing to write off the debt.

Experts note that losses for this kind of project at the R&D stage (research and development work) are quite expected. However, such weak indicators against the background of ambitious plans raise questions about the financial stability of the company. "SMI Holding" stated that they are not abandoning their plans and have already developed a new strategy for 2026–2027, within the framework of which they intend to release a model range of mobile devices already on their own operating system.

Alexander Kalinin, the founder of the "National Computer Corporation", who invested 10 billion rubles in the "Sovereign Mobile Initiative" project, initially planned to implement it not alone, but within the framework of a public-private partnership. According to his plan, a consortium of large players should be formed to create a new mobile ecosystem: Rostelecom could provide the infrastructure, VK could provide the application store, and Rosatom could provide system integration. Kalinin has repeatedly stressed that without political support and the unification of the efforts of the state and business, it is impossible to implement such a large-scale project alone.
