PJSC Yakovlev (part of Rostec) has patented a new aircraft wing design with a movable flap element that eliminates the gap between sections in flight. The solution aims to reduce aerodynamic losses, reduce noise, and reduce fuel consumption.
The problem arose in cruise mode — when the flaps are retracted, a gap forms between the root and tip sections. It worsens the characteristics of the wing and reduces the flight range.
Yakovlev's new scheme solves the problem with a movable flap end that automatically closes the gap.
The design includes a spring-loaded mechanism with two lever hinge joints and a longitudinal rod. When the flap is extended, the elements move, and when retracted, the movable end returns and presses tightly against the adjacent section. This ensures tightness and stable aerodynamics in all modes.
In addition, fluoroplastic plates and seals are used, which reduce friction and wear. The design of the aircraft engineers maintains operability during complex movements of the wing elements and eliminates distortions.
Such technologies are in demand in civil aviation, where reducing consumption and noise directly affects the economics of flights and compliance with modern requirements.
