Magnetic storm on Earth has subsided

Activity level has decreased to "calm"

The repeated magnetic storm that hit Earth on March 22 has ended. This was reported by the Institute of Applied Geophysics. According to experts, the disturbance of the planet's magnetic field is now at a minimum level — in meteorological terms, this state is called "calm."

A five-level scale is used to assess the strength of geomagnetic disturbances: from G1 (weak activity) to G5 (extreme storm). Current indicators correspond to the lower limit of the scale, that is, no significant deviations from the norm are recorded.

According to information from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of IKI RAS and ISZF SB RAS, the quiet period has already lasted about four hours. This suggests that the situation in near-Earth space is stabilizing.

The first burst of magnetic activity began on the day of the astronomical equinox, March 20, and then the storm reached level G3 — "strong". After a brief lull, the disturbance resumed on March 22 with similar intensity. Now, according to geophysicists, the peak has passed, and the Earth's magnetic field is returning to background values.

The probability of a third night of auroras, from March 23 to 24, currently looks, unfortunately, unlikely. The geomagnetic event was caused by fairly ordinary events on the Sun, and its actual intensity, although it was expected to be the strongest in two months, has still exceeded expectations.

Experts remind that even weak magnetic storms can affect the operation of satellites, radio communications, and power systems in high latitudes. However, at the current level of activity, the risks to technology and human health remain minimal. Monitoring continues as usual.
