The Indian Air Force has begun equipping Mi-17-V5 multi-purpose helicopters with Israeli Spike NLOS missiles, reports Indian Defence Research Wing (IDRW). Thanks to this, the machines, traditionally used for transportation and logistics, are receiving a new strike function.
Spike NLOS missiles allow hitting targets at a range of up to 50 kilometers — beyond line of sight, hidden behind terrain, buildings, or shelters. In flight, the missile transmits video to the control panel in the helicopter; if necessary, the operator can manually adjust the guidance.
The Mi-17-V helicopter has long been associated only with troop transportation, logistics, evacuation of the wounded, and the performance of various auxiliary tasks. Thanks to the installation of Spike NLOS suspended containers, this platform acquires a new purpose — a high-precision long-range strike helicopter.
Earlier it was reported that the Indian Air Force intends to modernize Su-30MKI aircraft with the involvement of Russian technologies. The activities will begin with the refinement of 84 machines out of more than 270 units in service.
