The initiative to ban the operation of ships older than 40 years in Russia was not supported at an expanded meeting of the Federation Council. This was reported by the press service of the Federal Agency for Fishery.

The head of the agency, Ilya Shestakov, during a meeting on key issues of the industry, noted that the proposal does not take into account the real pace of ship construction. By 2030, up to 65% of the fishing fleet may be banned.

It is necessary to take into account not only the service life of the vessel, but also how it was repaired. The main thing is that the vessel is suitable for safe navigation and fishing.

Discussions about the aging of the fleet in Russia resumed after the crash of the tankers "Volgoneft-212" and "Volgoneft-239" in the Kerch Strait in December 2024. This led to a spill of 2.4 thousand tons of oil products.

The Strategy for the Development of the Shipbuilding Industry stated that currently in the country 68% of tankers and 70% of passenger ships are older than 30 years, with 18% of the latter being operated for more than 60 years.
