The All-Russian Society of the Deaf (VOG) plans to involve universities and scientific institutions in the creation of programs based on artificial intelligence for translation into Russian Sign Language. This was announced by the president of VOG, Alexander Bochkov.
We want to connect [developers] to institutions so that linguists can develop correct and more accurate gestures that will be shown for people with hearing impairments. Our society has a science department, which includes various universities, as well as the Russian Academy of Sciences. We are promoting work in these areas to make it more correct.
According to Bochkov, many companies are now creating AI solutions for translation into sign language without the participation of the scientific community, which causes the systems to make a large number of errors.
Russian Sign Language is a unique linguistic system with its own vocabulary and grammar. It is used for communication by deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Russia, as well as in Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. Since December 30, 2012, it has had official status. The state has undertaken to support its study and development.
