The Investigative Committee of Russia is actively implementing artificial intelligence technologies to speed up investigations, said the head of the department, Alexander Bastrykin, in an interview with Interfax. According to him, AI helps to recognize faces and analyze large amounts of data, which makes it possible to speed up information processing hundreds of times, for example, comparing images of wanted persons with hours of video recordings.
At the same time, Bastrykin emphasized that the final analysis and evaluation of the results remain with the person. Artificial intelligence performs an auxiliary function, saving investigators time, but not completely replacing them. He called AI an additional tool that increases the efficiency of the department, but requires control by specialists to exclude errors and inaccuracies.
The head of the Investigative Committee noted that the growth of technology inevitably leads to an increase in IT crime. Over the past three years, the department has investigated more than 36.6 thousand criminal cases in the field of information technology: 9.5 thousand are related to theft, 6.1 thousand to economic crimes, 4.3 thousand to drug trafficking, 2.6 thousand to crimes against sexual integrity, more than 2 thousand to fraud. The number of crimes in the field of drug trafficking and online fraud has especially increased.
Bastrykin stated that a significant part of general criminal offenses are committed in digital format, therefore, the department is actively developing means of recording digital traces and introducing new technological tools. This allows the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation to keep pace with the growth of criminal activity and maintain control over investigations in the context of the digitalization of society.
