Can't Breathe: Air Pollution Control Efforts Intensified in Cherepovets

Work continues in Cherepovets to reduce the level of harmful substances in the air. The Governor of the Vologda Oblast, Georgy Filimonov, told TASS that monitoring data, residents' complaints, and information from the regional Ministry of Health confirm that the maximum permissible concentrations of harmful substances, such as phenol, formaldehyde, and hydrogen sulfide, are exceeded at the city's industrial sites.

To control emissions, six posts of Rosprirodnadzor have already been installed jointly with Rospotrebnadzor and Rosgidromet. Additionally, the region has purchased six more stationary air quality monitoring points.

Filimonov emphasized the need for joint work between the regional government and big business, including investments in treatment facilities and the introduction of environmentally friendly production technologies.

The head of the region noted that companies are already taking measures, but the problem persists, and its solution requires a systematic approach.

The ecological situation in Cherepovets remains a matter of attention, as the city is traditionally among the industrial centers with increased air pollution rates, including hydrogen sulfide and other harmful substances. The federal project "Clean Air" is being implemented as part of the national project "Ecology," in which Cherepovets has been participating since 2018.
