Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said that the state corporation is effectively cooperating with French partners in the field of nuclear technologies and continues to supply equipment as part of the international ITER thermonuclear reactor project in Cadarache, France.
Russia is not only one of the ideological inspirers of ITER, but also one of the main suppliers of equipment. And to the credit of the ITER leadership, despite all the political storms, no one still questions Russia's participation in the project. We have something to work on further. Nuclear fuel cycle, equipment supplies for our nuclear power units in third countries and much more. But whether these plans will come true depends primarily on the position of the European Union and France.
He noted that cooperation with France in the nuclear field has lasted for decades and is of an "exemplary nature." It was possible to build relationships in any political conditions, and they always remained mutually beneficial: for example, in the 1970s, at the height of the Cold War, supplies of Soviet enriched uranium largely ensured the development of French nuclear energy.
Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the European Union is considering including Lukoil, Gazprom and Rosatom in the 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions. According to him, proposals to ban the purchase of Russian oil and gas, as well as sanctions against the nuclear industry are unacceptable for Hungary. If they are adopted, the country may lose nuclear fuel for the Paks nuclear power plant and the opportunity to continue building the new Paks-2 station.
