A New Fraudsters' Scheme: How Snowfalls Have Turned Into a Threat for Russians

Criminals have come up with a new deception method related to snow removal

Fraudsters have begun using the problem of heavy snowfalls to deceive citizens. Andrei Biichuk, Director of the MTS Center for Telecom Technology Products, said that criminals pose as public utilities workers and try to obtain Russians' personal data.

Analysts at the "MTS Zashchitnik" service have identified a new scheme that is being actively used in regions with heavy snowfall. Fake utility service employees are making mass calls to citizens, creating the impression of an urgent need for snow removal. Their main goal is to force people to provide a code needed to access bank accounts or confirm unauthorized transactions.

To achieve their goal, fraudsters use every possible manipulation method. They talk about possible property damage to intimidate the victim, since poor weather conditions reduce citizens' vigilance. People trying to quickly resolve the problem that has arisen can easily fall for the fraudsters' trick.

Biichuk noted that real utility services never request passwords, codes, or bank card details over the phone. The specialist recommends seeking help only via the official numbers of management companies or city services.

It is important not to fall for fraudsters' tricks, especially in adverse weather conditions, when citizens' vulnerability increases.
