Kolomna Plant Ships 300th 18-9DGM Diesel Generator for Russia's Most Powerful 3TE28 Locomotive

The upgraded unit will provide traction for heavy trains on the BAM and in the Far East

Kolomna Plant, part of Transmashholding (TMH), has completed the delivery of the 300th 18-9DGM diesel generator. The anniversary engine passed acceptance by representatives of the inspection of JSC "Russian Railways" and was sent to the Bryansk Machine-Building Plant for installation on the three-section mainline locomotive 3TE28 — the most powerful in Russia.

Serial production of the upgraded 18-9DGM diesel generator at the Kolomna site began in the second half of 2023. The unit was developed by specialists from the TMH Engine Building Engineering Center, and assembly is carried out by experienced engineers and technicians from the Kolomna Plant.

The 18-9DGM unit is an improved version of the previously produced 18-9DG diesel generators, which are installed on two-section 2TE25KM locomotives. The new modification has become the energy base for the three-section 3TE28 locomotive, designed to drive heavy trains weighing up to 7100 tons on sections with a slope of up to 11.5‰. The operation of such locomotives is planned in the extreme climatic conditions of the Far Eastern Railway and on the routes of the Baikal-Amur Mainline, where a complex terrain and harsh weather conditions are combined.

According to the developers, on straight and level stretches, the locomotive is capable of hauling freight trains weighing up to 18,300 tons.
