The Sun will be 2 million kilometers closer to Earth

The convergence will occur on January 3, 2026

On January 3, 2026, the Earth will be 2 million kilometers closer to the Sun. The astronomical event will occur due to the peculiarities of our planet's orbit. According to astronomer Vladilen Sanakoev from UrFU, the minimum distance will be 147.1 million kilometers.

It is striking that this distance is shorter than usual. Usually, the Earth is 149.5 million kilometers away from the Sun. The reason for the change in distance lies in the elliptical shape of our planet's orbit. Instead of moving in a circle, the Earth follows an ellipse, which leads to fluctuations in the distance to the star during the year.

Interestingly, the maximum distance of the Earth from the Sun occurs in summer, in the beginning of July. In winter, on January 3, the Earth is closest to the star. This gives the sunlight a special brightness. On the day of maximum convergence, the Sun will visually appear larger and brighter than usual.

Every year, the inhabitants of the Earth can observe this unique phenomenon. Astronomers recommend not to miss the opportunity to take a closer look at the celestial body. Although the distance seems small, the effect on the perception of light will be noticeable.
