Nornickel Aims to Issue Carbon Units for Aviation

The company is negotiating with NordStar on the supply of certified carbon units to offset international flights

The mining and metallurgical company Nornickel is considering the possibility of issuing carbon units based on its own climate projects to meet the needs of the airline NordStar, the base carrier of the Norilsk industrial region. This was announced by the company's Vice President for Ecology and Industrial Safety, Stanislav Seleznev.

According to him, Nornickel already has the necessary competencies to generate, acquire, and extinguish carbon units. Currently, the company is negotiating with NordStar on potential cooperation in this area. If the air carrier confirms its interest, Nornickel will be able to direct the volume of carbon units received as part of its production initiatives to reduce emissions to offset aviation emissions.

Seleznev noted that the current demand for carbon units in Russia remains low, but the situation may change with the entry into force of the international CORSIA scheme in 2027. According to the requirements of this program, airlines will be required to offset greenhouse gas emissions from international flights by purchasing certified carbon units. This is expected to trigger an increase in both demand and prices for carbon credits, making the implementation of climate projects economically viable.
