In 2025, the Sun produced 18 very strong and 333 strong flares, which is about three times less than the year before. Sergey Bogachev, Head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute for Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reported this on December 23, 2025, to RIA Novosti.
According to the scientist, a decline in solar and geomagnetic activity was observed in 2025. During the year, 18 X-class flares were recorded, compared to 54 in 2024, and 333 M-class flares, compared to 885 the year before.
Bogachev noted that the number of less powerful C-class flares remained almost unchanged at about 2.8 thousand, as in 2024.
He added that the decrease in activity primarily concerns strong and very strong flares, while weak and medium ones occur with the same frequency.
