Serial Production of Hydrogen Trains to be Established in 2027

The first tests of the new train will take place in Sakhalin in 2026

The new hydrogen train from the engineering company «Transmashholding» (TMH) will be sent for testing to Sakhalin in 2026. A year later, the locomotive will begin serial production. This was announced at the V Congress of Young Scientists in «Sirius».

By the time the train is launched into pilot operation in Sakhalin in 2026, it is planned to create an infrastructure for refueling and servicing trains of this type.

The train will be presented in several versions. A consist of two head cars with a booster section and a three-car version with two head cars and an intermediate car.

The booster section will contain power plants, hydrogen storage systems, and energy storage devices. Sanitary units will also be located here, providing additional comfort for passengers.

The range of the hydrogen train varies depending on its configuration, speed, and ambient temperature. For a three-car train, the range is 487 km on hydrogen and 40 km on energy storage devices. A two-car train will be able to travel up to 725 km on hydrogen and 80 km on storage devices.

The main source of traction will be proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), which ensure reliable operation in the temperature range from 50 to 100 °C. Plans for the production of fuel cells include cooperation with China, with the prospect of establishing their production in Russia.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that the EMKA2 shunting electric locomotive had completed testing.

«Первый технический» is the industry information partner of the V Congress of Young Scientists, which takes place from November 26 to 28, 2025, on the federal territory of Sirius. This is the central event of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia.
