Work at Kursk NPP-2 is proceeding according to plan, despite the difficult situation in the region. This was announced by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, the construction and preparation for the launch of the first power unit of Kursk NPP-2 are being carried out as normal. Work at the Kursk station is proceeding "absolutely according to plan," taking into account the situation, Likhachev emphasized.
The Kursk NPP is located in the city of Kurchatov, Kursk Region, and is one of the largest sources of electricity in Central Russia. Currently, the station provides energy to 19 regions, and its three operating power units with a total capacity of 3 GW are among the most important objects of the country's energy infrastructure.
The new Kursk NPP-2 is being built on a site next to the existing station. The project with VVER-TOI reactors is being implemented here - the latest Russian power units of the "3+" generation. They are distinguished by increased safety, efficiency and are designed for a service life of up to 60 years with the possibility of extension for another 20. In 2025, Rostekhnadzor issued a license for the placement of nuclear installations for power units No. 3 and No. 4, which made it possible to begin preparing the site for further construction.
Earlier it was reported that the commissioning of the first power unit of Kursk NPP-2 was postponed from 2025 to 2026. The postponement was taken into account following a public discussion of the scheme and program for the development of the electric power industry until 2031.
