China has once again taken advantage of the developments of the Russian aviation industry. The new JL-XX training aircraft is largely based on domestic solutions used in the Yak-130.
The new twin-engine aircraft with twin-fin empennage and tandem cockpit was developed at Hongdu Aviation Industry Group in Nanchang.
In terms of architecture and aerodynamic design, the aircraft is closest to the Russian Yak-130 and the Italian M-346. However, it was the Yak that became the basis for the Chinese L-15 — the direct predecessor of the JL-XX.
The aircraft is equipped with two Minshan engines with a digital FADEC control system and a thrust of up to 49 kN each. The development is positioned as a successor to the outdated JL-9, created on the basis of, again, the Soviet MiG-21 (J-7).
