Irkutsk is preparing for a large-scale expansion of aviation production. Irkutsk Aviation Plant (IAZ), a branch of PJSC "Yakovlev", where MC-21 passenger aircraft are assembled, will build a new workshop for processing large-sized parts. The corresponding construction permit has been published on the city hall's website.
The total area of the future production complex will be 3.8 hectares. The new workshop will be designed for machining parts from aluminum and titanium alloys, key materials in the aviation industry. This will improve the accuracy and speed of aircraft assembly, as well as reduce dependence on third-party contractors.
According to the documents, the validity of the construction permit is limited to March 2029, which means the completion of the project within the next four years. Investments are aimed at preparing for the serial production of a fully import-substituted MC-21, which is expected to be certified in 2026.
The development of infrastructure at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant is an important step to accelerate the serial production of the aircraft. Increasing production capacity will allow the production of more fuselages and wings, including versions with a high-precision composite wing.
