Scientists from the Siberian Federal University (SFU) have developed an innovative device that simultaneously controls the charging and discharging of spacecraft batteries. The innovation will reduce the weight of onboard electronics by 30-45 percent and increase the efficiency of energy flows, the researchers reported in the "Siberian Aerospace Journal."
Today, two separate devices are used on spacecraft to control the charging and discharging of batteries. This scheme makes the system heavy, complex, and less energy efficient. There is currently no single device in the world that combines these functions, although it could increase the reliability and efficiency of power supply.
The new SFU solution allows replacing separate devices with one integrated device. This reduces the size and weight of equipment by a third and reduces energy losses by 30-35 percent. This makes it possible to further reduce the weight of solar and battery packs, increasing the payload of the spacecraft.
The lighter the technical part of the spacecraft, the more scientific or production load it can carry into orbit
Currently, SFU is creating a metal prototype of the device. After successful testing, the team will begin experimental design work and further implementation of the technology at enterprises involved in the production of energy conversion equipment for space.
Reducing weight and increasing the efficiency of power supply directly affects the cost of launches and the effectiveness of space missions. The technology will allow designing lighter and more reliable spacecraft capable of carrying more payload and operating longer.
