Russian machine-building enterprise Tyazhmash (Syzran) has shipped a core catcher to Sosnovy Bor - a key safety element of the Leningrad NPP-2 Unit 3 under construction with a VVER-1200 reactor. This was reported by the press service of Rosenergoatom.
The concern explained that the catcher, with a total weight of 730 tons, was developed by Russian nuclear scientists.
In the event of a hypothetical accident, the "catcher" will reliably hold the fuel melt inside itself until it completely cools down and crystallizes. All this happens automatically - without the participation of personnel.
On its way to the Leningrad Region, the catcher will travel more than 2,000 km by waterways. By the end of November 2025, the equipment will undergo incoming inspection and take its place in the reactor shaft.
