A Landmark Day for Transport: Russia's First Self-Driving Tram Launched in Moscow

The fully autonomous "Lion Cub-Moscow" tram operates on route No. 10 in the northwest of the capital

Moscow has launched Russia's first fully self-driving tram, the "Lion Cub-Moscow" model. It operates on route No. 10 "Shchukinskaya Metro Station – Kulakova Street" in the northwest of the city.

The innovative tram independently makes stops, opens and closes doors, obeys traffic lights and the schedule, and safely crosses intersections, yielding to pedestrians and other vehicles.

The tram has been tested since May 2024 over a distance of more than 8,000 km, and it has never violated traffic rules.

A tram management employee is present in the cabin for visual observation and resolution of organizational issues, but should not interfere with the vehicle's operation.

The software for autonomous driving was developed by employees of the Moscow Metro, and the technology is wholly owned by the Moscow Government.

By the end of the year, it is planned to launch three more self-driving trams, by 2026 there will be 15, and by 2030 — two-thirds of the capital's tram fleet. In addition, in the coming years, tests of the first self-driving metro train will begin.
