Scientists from Novosibirsk State Technical University, together with the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, have created a comprehensive method for diagnosing hydroelectric power plant (HPP) dams without stopping their operation.
The method combines seismo-emission tomography and measurement of natural structural vibrations under the influence of natural forces.
Testing showed the possibility of accurate localization of defects, including filtration zones at a depth of up to 30 meters, previously inaccessible for research. The method allows detecting corrosion, water saturation and other potentially dangerous changes in dams and can be used for surveying bridges, buildings and underground structures.
Scientists plan to implement monitoring systems for the timely detection of dangerous changes and expand the scope of the approach throughout Russia and abroad.
