The high-speed railway (HSR) Moscow - St. Petersburg has been included in the Moscow rail framework project for the period 2026-2030, according to the HSR information center.
The inclusion of the railway in the capital's transport development plan underscores the strategic importance of the project in creating a modern, accessible, and efficient infrastructure. The HSR will provide high-speed communication between the two largest cities in the country, reducing travel time and increasing the connectivity of regions.
According to estimates, the HSR network will eventually cover up to 80% of the Russian population. The first phase of the high-speed line is scheduled to begin operation in 2028.
The HSR Moscow - St. Petersburg project is seen as a key element of the country's future transport system, which will be integrated into the capital's metro and railway scheme, enhancing mobility and accessibility for passengers.
Construction of the HSR between Moscow and St. Petersburg began in 2024. Completion of the work is expected in 2028. After the launch of the railway, the journey will take 2 hours and 15 minutes, which is almost twice as fast as it is now.
It is also reported that Russian Railways has begun testing the contact network for the first stage of the HSR Moscow - St. Petersburg. An experimental section 800 m long was mounted on the Experimental Ring of the VNIIZhT in Shcherbinka.
